![]() ![]() I’ve seen some folks play Hendrix and Cream songs with a master volume JMP so it can certainly be done with a 2203. The plexi will do late ‘60s rock like the later years of Hendrix’ live sound and Cream along with ‘70s and ‘80s hard rock but the 2203 will do ‘70s and ‘80s hard rock as well at a lower volume. I feel there’s more flexibility jumping channels but the volume required for it to breakup is far more than is needed with a 2203 since that has a master volume. Superlead style amps can sound fuller because you can jumper channels and blend the bass channel into the lead or the other way around. ![]() If you can run the master up past 3 which is moving serious air you can have a respectable driven sound with the gain below 7 or at least I could with my 800 I play single coil Strats and teles so it wasn’t an issue but with hot enough humbuckers it might not be “clean” enough just backing down your guitar volume knob. It’s just a bit too much gain to back off with some guitars depending on pickup strength. I have no idea why but there’s just a bit more gain and volume that fills out the lows even if your master volume is at 1 or 2. With the master volume amps like the 22 the amp sounds thin and weedy if the preamp volume is below 7. ![]() One of the peculiarities about most old Marshall amps is the volume sounds best above 6 or 7 whether it be preamp volume with a master volume amp or a 4 hole amp and the bright cap on the lead channel You should be able to set up a 2203 for that volume trick because I’ve done the same with my 800. I’ve played versions of both but only a 50w 800, a superlead reissue, and the sv20 ![]()
